  • Anywhere

Company Description

The Daily Beast delivers award-winning original reporting and sharp opinions from big personalities in the arenas of politics, pop-culture, world news, and more. Fiercely independent and armed with irreverent intelligence, we now reach more than 20 million readers per month. We are based in New York and are an operating business of IAC.

The Opportunity

The Daily Beast is seeking a strategic, analytical, and creative thinker to lead our subscription program – along with growth of our loyalty products that support deepening engagement in the subscription funnel (registration, newsletters, apps). Subscriptions are a crucial part of supporting our newsroom and the 2024 election year is an exciting opportunity to grow the program.

As head of subscriptions, this person should have experience with acquisition and retention marketing for a paid product, from offering strategy and pricing to test design and analysis. A clear understanding of how to effectively move users through a marketing funnel to increase loyalty and drive conversion is a must. The ideal candidate is an agile, big-picture thinker who can also roll up their sleeves and contribute hands-on to achieve our subscription goals.

This person will own a roadmap across testing, tools, and offerings – working cross-functionally with product, engineering, data, editorial, and revenue operations teams to drive growth.

The role will report to the SVP Product and manage the growth team. Their ultimate goal is to be a champion and steward of the subscription program and what it takes to drive its success.

Responsibilities:

Develop and execute a comprehensive acquisition and retention strategy aligned with the company’s objectives and growth targets
Establish yourself as subject-matter expert on The Daily Beast’s subscription and loyalty products, best practices in the industry, and our competitive set
Leverage data to develop and constantly iterate on our subscription strategy, including user segmentation, messaging strategy, and pricing optimization
Identify long-term/short-term trade offs of acquisition strategy tactics on traffic, user experience, and advertising revenue
Oversee a robust email marketing strategy, including lifecycle flows for key user groups and regular acquisition and winback campaigns
Understand what drives consumer decisions to convert or churn in order to effectively evolve benefits and/or messaging around the value proposition
Report on performance metrics, surfacing clear insights and recommendations for how to optimize
Collaborate with our product and design team to think through and complete UX flows, wireframes, and design iterations for on-site growth marketing tools
Foster an inclusive and welcoming culture within the growth team, promoting close collaboration and career development
Effectively delegate tasks and responsibilities to team members based on their strengths and areas for development
Oversee the evaluation of our subscription tech stack in coordination with our analytics and tech teams

What You’ll Bring

6-8 years of previous acquisition marketing experience for a consumer subscription product
Knowledge of the constantly evolving media landscape. Experience in publishing/media is helpful but not required
Experience with retention marketing and growth of loyalty products like newsletters and apps is a plus, but not required
A strong blend of leadership, analytical prowess, and a deep understanding of user behavior and revenue dynamics
A motivational and thoughtful approach to team and people management
A proven track record of designing and implementing A/B tests to drive business results
Ability to clearly communicate data-based insights, recommendations, and decisions to cross-functional contributors and leadership
A self-starter and eager collaborator who isn’t afraid to take an idea and run with it
Strong operational chops, with the ability to context switch and manage multiple projects at once
Ability to move fluidly between quantitative and qualitative tasks
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present ideas and results to senior leadership
Impeccable attention to detail
Proficiency in Google Analytics, Microsoft Excel, and Google’s G Suite
